FAQs

How does it work?

Hilo is a subscription service that provides 24/7, cuffless blood pressure monitoring using a clinically validated, CE-marked Class IIa medical device.
The service includes two core components that work together to measure, track, and display your cardiovascular data:

1. Hilo Band

The Hilo Band is a wearable device that uses optical sensors (photoplethysmography, or PPG) to detect signals from your wrist. It calculates your blood pressure using Pulse Wave Analysis (PWA) after a calibration with the Hilo Cuff, which is required once every 30 days.

The band automatically measures your blood pressure and heart rate around 25 times per day, without requiring any interaction.
It emits no lights or alerts, is comfortable, and is designed for continuous wear, including during sleep.

2. Hilo App

The Hilo App syncs with your Hilo Band and gives you access to your health data. It displays how your blood pressure changes throughout the day and night, highlighting trends related to activitymealsstresssleep, and medication.

You can also share reports directly from the app with your doctor or family to your doctor about your results and never rely solely on this device for health decisions.

How is my blood pressure monitored?

Hilo Band uses PPG technology (Photoplethysmography) to acquire optical data on your wrist. The PPG data are then transferred through the Hilo App to a secured cloud server on which Hilo’s algorithms estimate your blood pressure through advanced processing of the optical data. Hilo Band detects if the user is moving before initiating a PPG measurement and will provide blood pressure measurements only when the user is still. This product is licensed under patents owned by CSEM SA, Switzerland.

Wearing the bracelet 24hrs/day, will send the measurements to the Hilo App that you installed on your Phone and will give you an overall understanding of your blood pressure at day and at night.

How often does the Hilo Band take a BP reading?

Hilo Band is not set to read at any specific time intervals; Hilo Band will attempt a reading randomly, several times per hour. Hilo Band will attempt a reading as soon as the user is still. The number of readings will depend on the user's level of activity.

Each measurement is saved in the bracelet and will transmit to the app, when you sync the data. You can do this manually, by going to the “Insights” tab and swiping down, or it will transmit the data automatically, when your phone is near the bracelet.

The Hilo App displays the average of your blood pressure readings.

You can view all individual measurements by clicking on "See all readings" in the detailed Blood Pressure screen. This screen can be accessed by clicking the arrow in the top right corner or anywhere on the blood pressure card in the "Insights" tab.

How accurate is Hilo?

The Hilo Band is not a simple consumer wearable device. The Hilo Band is a CE Marked Class IIa medical device that has undergone extensive and thorough clinical validation.

Aktiia’s technology powers Hilo and is based on 20 years of research and over 100K users.

While developing the technology used in the Hilo Band, two clinical trials have been conducted that have demonstrated that its accuracy is comparable to that of a regular cuff that you would place on your upper arm. In particular, our medical device has been validated in patients representing the general population, according to the ISO-81060-2 international standard.

How does Hilo Band and the Hilo Cuff connect to the Hilo App?

Hilo uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity to transfer data
between the bracelet and the mobile application running on a smartphone.
